The latest single to be taken from forthcoming LP The Two And The One by Blend Mishkin and Panos Dimitrakopoulos is this – Mirror City Riddim. The whole sound is dominated by the kanun – (traditional Middle Eastern plucked zither, m’lud) – amongst which guest organist Guillaume Metenier of Soul Sugar fame weaves jazzy Hammond while polyrhythmic drums and pulsing bass complete the picture. It’s a cinematic sound that evokes steadily rising tension – perhaps as our man (or woman) in a sun-stunned Middle Eastern city suddenly realises they’re being followed and that the medina – far from being funky and cold – is about to heat up exponentially.
