Do you still need the sun? The monkey still needs the sun, especially after the – ooh – last month or so of anticyclonic gloom. And so to Adrian Younge’s new single Ainda Preciso Do Sol which, you guessed it, is Portuguese for ‘I still need the sun.’ The track is the second single to be released from Younge’s forthcoming Something About April III LP, the third in his trilogy of psychedelic soul albums. If you’ve been keeping up, SAA II was all about the nexus of classic Stateside soul and Euro cinema soundtracks and SAA I was – er – kind of the same. For Something About April III however, Younge has created a crossover between American cinematic soul and the classic sounds of Brazil. Not a person to do things by halves, our man has spent the last few years learning Portuguese so he could pen the lyrics for the new long player in the language of the culture that inspired him. And since even that wasn’t enough of a challenge he also committed to learning the double bass at the same time. The single itself turns on a phat drum break and a hypnotic bassline adorned with jazzy Brazilian strings, piano and ethereal vocals. And it’s an absolute dream.
