Mmmm, ssstankyyy! Barcelona-based The Blaxound come doubly correct on new 45 Brand New Old Story Pt 2 b/w Spring King which forms something of a sister release to Tom Caruana’s funk nugget Penguin Strut, the October release of which (also on Village Live Records) MB covered at the end of September. On this one, Marta Román’s crew drop not one but two drum-breaks-heavy funk instrumentals featuring Hammond toplines. Brand New Old Story Pt 2 augments this with lashings of wah-wah guitar while on Spring King the guitar’s all about the rhythm n chank. Not cheesy seventies funk, not ‘sophisticated’ jazz-funk, just real deal gut-bucket rawness to get your hips and feet jerking every which way.
