PHIRPO Y SUS CARIBES: Y Esa Pava Que?/ Pa’ Los Rumberos (Vinyl 7″)

Matasuna Records are back with another massive Latin funk 45 from Venezuelan outfit Phirpos Y Sus Caribes – and not for the first time either, since 2021 saw the label re-release Comencemos with Mi Moooto on the flip. This new one sees two more tracks from the band’s only LP, Parrilla Caliente, get a single release and it’s the first time on vinyl 7″ for both. B-side Pa’ Los Rumberos is an uptempo cover of Tito Puente’s already uptempo 1972 version of his own fairly uptempo 1956 original (title translation – ‘For The Dancers’) – and certainly rocks the spot. What you’ll really want this for though is A-side Y Esa Pava Que? – a dope slice of fiery psychedelic funk which you’d like to think must have made it onto one of Kool Herc’s original 1973 block party sets.
(Out 7 June on Matasuna Records)
