ORIGINAL GRAVITY RECORDS: Down In The Basement Vol. 3 (Vinyl 7″)

Time for a new instalment of Original Gravity’s occasional four-track label sampler 45 Down In The Basement which on Vol.3 (as on Vols. 1-2) features cuts from four of the label’s acts. And you surely know by now that that means four tracks by multi-instrumentalist label owner Neil Anderson plus any session artists he sees fit to draft in. This one’s an all-instrumental affair and first up is Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts’ bluesy mid-sixties-inspired R&B chugger Slippy followed by Abramo & Nestor’s super bad slice of Latin funk Gumband. Side Two opens with another funky piece – Melvin Craig’s organ-led head-nodder Redd Up before proceedings close with the unusually-named Return Of The Yinzer by Native Yinzer. ‘Yinzer’? Oh what – as in a term with Scots origins to describe Pittsburgh, Pensylvania natives? The very same! Not to mention that it’s an energetic slice of b-boy funk with a blues-chords-based melody and the monkey’s favourite of the four.
