MARCO BENEVENTO: Frizzante/ Turandot (Vinyl 7″)

The latest Big Crown signing is multi-instrumentalist and sometime El Michels Affair keyboardist Marco Benevento and his debut for the label is this 45 featuring Frizzante and Turandot. Both cuts draw heavily from the 60s/70s soundtrack tradition but while A-side Frizzante provides almost whimsical soundtrack funk that you might expect to score a Robert dialogue-free interlude in a Redford Romance (or something), Turandot is totally different, and arguably the more interesting track. Featuring Italian singer Marianne Mirage, it’s lilting rhythm and yearning vocals deliver splendidly atmospheric Bond-film OST vibes and also more than a soupçon of Gainsbourg-esque sauciness.
