The Scribes’ lead vocalist, Jonny Steele reveals he’s keeping his lyrical chops well-honed between Scribes releases by stepping out on solo lyrical adventure Whetstone: Session One. It’s a pensive number on which our man engages in complex wordplay over Bristol-producer OneSoul’s tinkly piano-led beat exploring the varied topics of his mental health, his rhyme skills and his home city of Bristol. Talking of which, the lyric video was shot in central Bristol, at night, which maximises the Bristol connection, sets off the lyrics nicely and conveys that existential sense of despair common to all cities in which you’re surrounded by people but not necessarily making connections. Look out for the close-up on bus destinations – the 45 terminates at Cherry Gardens now – who knew?
