Two ‘new’ old cuts here from Markey Funk (of psych-label Delights) and Mule Driver of Group Modular, back after a three-year break, on this 45 with The Tunnel b/w Lonely Pylon. And, if those track titles don’t sound familiar despite having previously dropped, maybe it’s because they only came out on split releases on different labels on short-run lathe-cut 7″s and both sold out on the day of release! Markey’s put that right here however with a longer run pressing and bigger distribution. He’s also created a separate imprint for it, also called Group Modular, due to the slightly different nature of the sound. As far as that goes, The Tunnel isn’t far different from other releases on Delights – a gloriously atmospheric slice of retro-synth-drenched library music-cum-psychedelia (and tribute to cthonic train experience) – albeit at a sedate 70 bpm or so. Perhaps it’s that slower tempo that makes it a kind of gateway drug for the also gloriously atmospheric and also retro-synth-drenched B-side Lonely Pylon though, which eschews drums altogether as it uses psychedelic soundscapes to evoke out-there landscapes. Don’t mind if I do!
