The label isn’t called Battle Weapons for nothing and here are two massive cut n paste bangers on 45 for you to slay the dancefloor with. First up is Excel Mixmaster’s Hook Me Up which he apparently started making in 1999, stitching together classic hip-hop joints. One has to assume he hasn’t been tinkering away at it continuously for a quarter of a century so presumably it got shelved at some point and then disinterred recently for this Battle Weapons release. Anyway, expect to hear Slick Rick, KRS-One, Wreckz-N-Effect, Bad Boys, Eric B & Rakim, Beasties, Run DMC and more going head-to-head over phat beats. Flip it over and LL Smooth K chooses to open with a sample of Dixie Cups’ Iko Iko though it’s not long before heavy beats get thrown in the mix and Sean Paul arrives swiftly followed by Eve. Why it’s like a 80s/90s hip-hop party followed by a 90s/00s hip-hop party. What’s not to like? Get your hands in the air!
(Out 2 May on Battle Weapons Records)
