Lewis Recordings signing Emmeline follows up late summer’s release of Marina B-featuring single LittleMissSixty with her LiftGoingUp EP and we’re firmly back in a late nineties soundscape that includes Earthling, Sneaker Pimps and Beck. A four-tracker, it features 2By2‘s post-grunge guitar beatscape and closer Steppinout which comes on like a cut excised from Tricky’s Maxinquaye or Massive Attack’s Mezzanine for being slightly too energetic. The best two tracks however are Rodeo – featuring rapper Vermin The Villain – and the aforementioned LittleMissSixty, both of which are very much at the nexus of the Earthling and Sneaker Pimps sound. Production comes from Emmeline’s label mates The Still Brothers with whom she’s worked before and unless the monkey is very much mistaken, she will be working again, since this lift is very much going up.
