LANCE FERGUSON: Summer Madness

LANCE FERGUSON: Summer MadnessThe final single to be relased from the forthcoming Rare Groove Spectrum Vol. 2 LP from The Bamboos’ Lance Ferguson is his crack at covering Kool & The Gang’s super chilled-out and therefore (presumably) ironically named Summer Madness instro from 1974. You may recognise this from its having been heavily sampled alongside multiple appearances on film and video-game soundtracks. And the first thing to notice is Ferguson’s version is as chilled as the original. But while the instrumentation bears similarities (there are still plenty of interwoven Rhodes and synth shapes being conjured), it’s also got different drums now. These take the form of a stoner break so relaxed it’s horizontal but nonetheless more in evidence than the percussion on the original. Frankly though, the only ‘madness’ either version is likely to prompt is of the spectacularly languorous kind – shotgun that beer for me will you, I can’t be arsed to get up…
