ANNAMÁRIA D’ALMEIDA: History Repeating (Vinyl 7″)

Actually not a cover of The Propellerheads’ Shirley Bassey-featuring 90s affair of the same name, Annamária D’Almeida’s History Repeating nonetheless shares a similarly 60s retro-vibe and is also very much aimed at the dancefloor. Instead of a big-beat/ big-band soul crossover with thumping drums and the Bassey growl however what you get is a Latin/ northern soul crossover with lighter percussion and the D’Almeida sultriness – which also turns out to be a potent recipe. What about a flipside? Perhaps Senor Maravilloso by Nestor Alvarez (a.k.a. label boss Neil Anderson in Latin guise – check the initials of both names!) a gorgeous Hammond-led Latin boogaloo nugget. Yeah – that should do it!
