VARIOUS: Jalapeno Funk Vol. 5 (2014)

Jalapeno Funk Vol. 5Once more the Jalapeno Records label plunges the compilation ladle into the chili bowl of its recent back catalogue and serves the ingredients up with a generous side order of exclusives on Jalapeno Funk Vol. 5. Nineteen aural taste sensations ensue and nearly all of them are funk-related. The opening trio of the spicy revved-up neo-northern soul of Aldo Vanucci/ Kylie Auldist collab. Get A Hold On This, the rich blues breaks Of Basement Freaks A Blues Thang and the chunky boom-bap of Hoglodytes/ The Good People number Time To Start Thinking is a case in point. Taste buds tingling? There’s also a couple of Quasamodo tracks (including an excellent cover of The Barkays’ Son Of Shaft), swinging ghetto-funk-hop from Featurecast and C.Reid, a chunky electro boogie mix of Smoove & Turrell’s Broke, a groovy nugget of bongo-funk from Soopasoul, a tasty party breaks mix of Skeewiff’s Now I’m Livin For Me and a stadium-sized slab of female-vocal fronted electro-breaks from Cadien. But hang on! What’s this from Skaggs, Robin Parris and Kraak & Smaak? I’m getting…it feels like…it…it feels like…house music. Gahh – who puts house in a funk-related compilation? Just pick those bits out and put them on the side yeah?
