VARIOUS: Jalapeno Funk Vol. 13

The start of January isn’t traditionally a fertile period in the annual record company release schedule so perhaps starting a new year by covering one record company’s retrospective look at its output for the previous year isn’t a bad way to go. That record company, is Jalapeno Records of course, while the retrospective in question is Jalapeno Funk Vol. 13. It’s a compilation that brings together a whopping twenty tracks showcasing the varied talent on the label’s roster and includes three cuts apiece by The Allergies, Sam Redmore, Kraak & Smaak and Flevans, two apiece from John Turrell and Izo FitzRoy and one apiece by Smooth & Turrell, Gizelle Smith, Soopasoul and Radio Trip. Of these, two are remixes – Scrimshire’s re-flip of Sam Redmore’s Giorgio Moroder cover Tears, and Smoove’s version of Izo FitzRoy’s Blind Faith. Across that lot, the label’s got you covered for party breaks, blues breaks, nu-disco, Afro-Latin grooves and soul. Best cuts are The Allergies’ fat blues-breaker Treat You Right, the upbeat retro-party breaks of Flevans’ Get To It, Kraak & Smaak’s disco breakin’ C’Mon People and Radio Trip’s slo-mo blues breakin’ closer Gambling Man. And if that doesn’t convince this label got it going on, nothing will.
