VARIOUS: Crash Of Thunder (Vampisoul)(2013)

[RATING: 5] How I do love thee funk and soul. And for that very reason how (also) I do love this straight dope collection of vintage funk, soul and rnb compiled for Vampisoul by deejay Mr Fine Wine, originally released six years ago and now getting a well-deserved double vinyl repress. The name is Crash Of Thunder and the game is sourcing lesser known classic cuts from the King, Federal and Deluxe labels.

I say ‘lesser known’ – the stuff on here ranges from super-rare cuts like The Swinging Seven’s Football to a brace of Marie ‘Queenie’ Lyons cuts (Fever and Your Key Won’t Fit Anymore) that there’s a fair chance you’ve come across before. There’s even tracks that you might think you’ve come across before when you haven’t. Certainly there’s an uncanny resemblance between the guitar riff in The President’s Which Way and the guitar riff on Color Climax’s contemporary deep funk number Plug It In released on Breakin Bread 45 – er – nearly six years ago. Funny that…

What your favourites will be is a matter of personal taste. Were, you to request guidance from the monkey however, you’d surely be led in the general direction of Jeb Stuart’s uptempo boss soul groover Soul Jerk It, Baby, the lazy horns and trashy surf guitar tango on the lo-fi but super funky ‘other’ Presidents’ track Peter Rabbit, and my two favourites – Clarence Murray’s soul burner The Book Of Love and the previously mentioned Queenie Lyons cut – Your Key Don’t Fit It Anymore. Props to Mr Fine Wine then – still soul boss.
(Out 10 June on Vampisoul)
