THE ONE & NINES: Tell Me/ Make It Easy (2011)

Here’s a sweet original rnb-styled 45 from New Jersey band The One & Nines that might be of interest to anyone who caught The Excitements self-titled release earlier in the year. And if you like G Love & Special Sauce too you’ll shit when you hear the A side. Guitarist Jeff Marino’s G-style vocals aside, the uptempo Tell Me also features some nifty James Burton style fretwork and a horn section. Nuff said. Over on the flip the band’s female vocalist Vera Sousa gives her best ‘sultry’ on torch song Make It Easy. The single was recorded in Memphis with Scott Bomar of the Bo-Keys as mix engineer and mastered and cut by no less than Stax legend Larry Nix who did similar duties for Isaac Hayes back in the day. Apparently it’s due to be followed by an LP at some point. If you like it, you’ll want to cop The One & Nines EP from early last year.
