THE CAPTAIN feat. GEO JOHNSON: Galactic FUNK (2016)

Galactic Funk The Captain Geo JohnsonThe opener to The Captain‘s new Galactic Funk EP, Feel Me Now finds getting down with the kids inna trap stylee. What you’ll be feeling more on this drop though is the title track which finds our man making the mothership connection with his funky party breakbeats. Like any good space – er – captain though, he’s got a reliable second-in-command. In this case that’ll be lyrical science

THE CAPTAIN: The Bossa Fella’s Funk (2014) Free download coming soon!

The Bossa Fella's Funk The CaptainTurns out that the Beatnik City Records crew got so excited about their debut release of Brazilian sixties-edits, The Rio District Vol. 1, that they lost one of the tracks for the release during all the celebratory grooving and shaking. The Captain‘s Bossa Fella’s Funk (for this is the missing track) is essentially a bossa beat remix of Fatboy Slim’s Rockafeller Skank which famously sampled the

SCOUR RECORDS: Freemixed Nuts Vol. 2 (2014)

Freemixed Nuts Vol. 2 Scour RecordsIt’s that time of the year when Scour Records show their love for all the love they’ve been receiving end during the rest of the year with Freemixed Nuts Vol. 2. How do they do this? Why (if the label logo is a clue at any rate) by delivering classic cuts (or ‘nuts’, if you will) into the scrabbling clawed hands and rodent-like teeth of various artists signed to the label. Kinky. Father Funk is

THE CAPTAIN: Run (Moby vs. Wu-Tang Clan) (2014) Free download

Run Moby WTC The CaptainDespite the embarrassing publicity of the Costa Concordia incident, there are still Italian captains more than capable of piloting a reliable course. Once such is – er – The Captain who, here, hits upon the conceit of making a match between the one of hip-hop’s greatest storytellers, Ghostface Killah, with one of electronica’s baldes- I mean blues-iest, producers – Moby. With Run he safely

ICONS OF GHETTO FUNK 2013 Parts 1 & 2: Free download (2013)

I had been thinking this latest annual installment of the Ghetto Funk Icons series, Icons Of Ghetto Funk, was early. But then I checked and actually it’s later than the previous two years. And that’s not all that’s different. This time the icons they’re remixing aren’t the popular music giants of yore but some of the label’s own artists. Say what? Remixes of the Ghetto Funk back catalogue by

THE CAPTAIN presents: PHONOMATT & TOMMYBOY (2013)

This latest release from Breakbeat Paradise finds Italian duo Phonomatt & Tommyboy at the helm under the guidance of The Captain a.k.a. Fab Samperi. It also demonstrates one of the label’s strengths i.e. it’s broad approach to breakbeat music, here manifested in a five stage voyage that, broadly speaking, sails through the brisker end of bass. 5 O’ Clock is a liquid dnb-ish EZ Rollers-esque

GHETTO FUNK presents: THE CAPTAIN (GFP013)(2013)

The Captain a.k.a. Italian breaks producer Fab Samperi, is a man known for his wide-ranging voyages across the seas of breakbeat-related music. He seems of late to have been cruising mostly in ghetto funky waters though. Aptly enough, really, since here he is with a party ship of an EP on the Ghetto Funk label. It’s all very modern with wobbly bass and those drop thingies and suchlike

TREMENDO Vol. 1: Various (2011)

Telephunken drops the first release on his own label Tremendo here and it’s eight floor fillers from across the ghetto funk/ funky breaks spectrum from the likes of his own bad self, Stickybuds, The Captain, Tom Drummond, Bobby C Sound TV, Bryx, The Breakbeat Junkie and Ursula 1000. Basically you’re supplied with ammunition for virtually every style of breaks dj occasion: you’ve got your

CMC & SILENTA: Roca Records presents Feature Breaks Vol. 2 (2011)

Second release in CMC & Silenta’s Feature Breaks series on their Roca imprint and they’ve opened up their back catalogue for remixing. It has to be said that this could be tantamount to handing a nutter some garden shears and getting your wedding tackle out, depending on who you’ve got on remix duties. Never fear though, half the ghetto funk universe were already queueing

FAB SAMPERI: Listen Up – 2011

Rating: ★★★★★
Did you know that ‘Fab Samperi’ is actually Italian for ‘dope groove’? It doesn’t really matter too much as you would have instinctively grasped this fact upon hearing the title track on this release. More or less a cover of Marvin Gaye’s Can I Get A Witness it operates via a funky breakbeat so fast it breaches the drum n bass barrier and yet retains a huge retro vibe courtesy of sixties keyboard sounds, horns and the classic soul vocals from Jonnathan Molina.
