Introducing: ORIGINAL GRAVITY RECORDS

ORIGINAL GRAVITY RECORDSIf you’ve been keeping your ear to Craig Charles’ Funk & Soul Show in the last year and bit, you’ll probably have heard any one of a string of dope 45s from Original Gravity Record‘s artists. Maybe soul man Floyd James and his band the GTs rings a bell? Perhaps you caught a vinyl 7″ from funky instrumentalist Melvin Craig, mod-fuzz act The Supersonics or the garage bluesy Labrats?  Are those names and

KIBOSH: Globetrottin’ Freemix

KIBOSH: Globetrottin' FreemixThere was a time when the music formerly known as ‘ghetto funk’ became decidedly unfunky. Come to think of it, it was around the height of ghetto funk mania, when people started jumping on the bandwagon, skipping the vital step of including anything related to actual funk, and letting the wobble bass tail wag the breakbeat dog. Some might disingenuously claim it was never meant to be

THE ALLERGIES: Dig Jalapeno (Album)(2017) + ‘Blast Off’ remix premiere

THE ALLERGIES: Dig Jalapeno (Album)(2017) + 'Blast Off' remix premiereEverybody knows deejay-producers love nothing better than getting the keys to a record company’s back catalogue so one can only imagine the pants-wetting excitement Bristol duo The Allergies must have experienced when they recently gained access to Jalapeno’s vaults. Of course, having penetrated the inner sanctum, there was nothing left to do but have had a right old rummage. The

GOOD GROOVE presents: JAYL FUNK (GGD14)(2015)

Good GRoove Presents Jayl FunkRating: ★★★★★ The goodness just keeps coming doesn’t it? Here’s Jayl Funk with a characteristically party-style re-funk of numbers by Rufus Thomas, Ben E King and OV Wright plus one I just can’t place and I’m really going to kick myself when I find out, oh the shame of it. This set is precisely what a good set of edits should all be about. Two of the tracks in their original form

SOUL REVOLUTION: One More Time (2011)

Soul Revolution are ‘The Lion Of Bordeaux’ and Don Argentino (no, really) – two heads brought together by the lure of the smoky basement clubs of the capital of Aquitaine who discovered a shared love of the U.S. West Coast hip-hop underground. ‘Le Lion de Bordeaux,’ in particular, may sound familiar to UK funk heads, probably because he’s the lead singer in a band with one of the best names (and some of the best sounds) in

CMC & SILENTA: Funky Town (2011)

Manmade Records’ big boss men, CMC and Silenta have just dropped this party cut on their other label Roca which revolves around the old Banbarra Shack Up beat made famous by (among others) Stetsasonic on Talkin’ All That Jazz. This is the fastest I’ve ever heard it used though and it triggers the bpm radar at a nu funkin 127 bpm or thereabouts. Keeping up is MC Penny wryly observing

MANMADE RECORDS: Feature Funk Vol. 7 – 2011

A game of two halves this one. The A side consists of label bosses CMC & Silenta continuing to sidestep predictability with an disco-breaks/ wobbly-bassed/ big female vox-powered cut that seems to have been formulated solely for the purpose of convincing those formerly enamoured of house music that, yes, the nu/ ghetto funk scene has something for them. I certainly didn’t expect that.
