PAMA INTERNATIONAL: (I Am Nothing) Without You b/w Smile & Say Good Morning (Vinyl 7″)

Pama International continue their recent conversion from reggae to retro soul (and get their southern soul on especially) with new vinyl 45 (I Am Nothing) Without You b/w Smile & Say Good Morning. This is the first single to be lifted from the band’s forthcoming Part 3 soul album and once again features Jewels Vass on vocals. The first of the two tracks is a midtempo cut that

PAMA INTERNATIONAL: You Are So Beautiful b/w Stop The War On The Poor (Vinyl 7″

You Are So BeautifulEsrtwhile reggae commandos Pama International stick with the current soul direction for a new vinyl 7″ with two offerings from their 2019 album Stop The War On The Poor. First track up is You Are So Beautiful and yes, it’s not just the same name, it really is the song you’re thinking of. However, if you were expecting miserable emoting a la Billy Preston, Joe Cocker and Christina Aguilera, forget

PAMA INTERNATIONAL ft. JEWELS VASS: Socially Distant (Vinyl 7″)

PAMA INTERNATIONAL ft. JEWELS VASS: Socially Distant (If you were wondering what was coming next from Pama International, wonder no longer as the retro-reggae-cum-soul outfit has a new LP, entitled 6, planned for the spring and you can already cop a taste of the first leak as a super limited vinyl 45, Socially Distant. Blimey, that doesn’t sound like a barrel of laughs does it? And you’d be right. But that’s because the band aren’t

PAMA INTERNATIONAL: Part Two (The Altruistic Soul Sound Of Pama International)

PAMA INTERNATIONAL: Part Two (The Altruistic Soul Sound Of Pama International)Rating: ★★★★★ The altruism of Pama International seemingly knows no bounds as they unleash another full set of sixties soul-style covers and originals entitled Part Two following swiftly in the wake of last week’s 45 which, as you might expect, contained two cuts off this particular release by way of a lead single. The LP’s name of course is a reference to the fact that this is the

PAMA INTERNATIONAL: Stop The War On The PoorBlimey – no hiding the message on Pama International’s new one, Stop The War On The Poor as they eschew their more usual preference for rocksteady vibes with some heartwarming retro-soul that recalls Irma Thomas’s early seventies work with Jerry ‘Swamp Dogg’ Williams. Constructed from emotive piano and soul horns

PAMA INTERNATIONAL: Love & Austerity (2017)

Time to rock the rocksteady once more and not before time either since Pama International’s latest LP Love & Austerity has been out a month already. Mind you, it’s not like the band themselves don’t know a thing or two about tardiness since this LP – their tenth – is their first in seven years. But what can we expect of these former BBC Radio 6 Rebel playlist winners who in

heatwave-pama-internationalRating: ★★★★★ The long-absent Pama International make an impressive return after seven years with a new line-up and a sureshot rocksteady cover of Martha & The Vandellas’ Holland Dozier Holland-penned Heatwave – a.k.a Love Is Like A Heatwave. Vocals come courtesy of Jewels Vass and Anna Uhuru who conspire to sound a little bit Supremes-ish – appropriately enough

PAMA INTERNATIONAL: I Still Love You More (Bongolian Mix) – Single release details + tour dates

Being the first new band in thirty years to sign to the mighty Trojan Records a couple of years back is fairly impressive credential I think you’ll agree. But then again the Pama International ska/ rocksteady/ soul collective’s revolving line-up is a virtual who’s who of classic rocksteady/ ska movers and shakers of the last few decades. In fact they’re kind of like the antidote to UB40. I Still Love You More plays atypically ‘on’ the beat rather than off it however, and emphasises their sunnier, soulier, pop side as they rope in mod-commando The Bongolian a.k.a. Big Boss Man organ-tickler Nasser Bouzida. I wonder if now’s a good time to point out that it does bear a passing resemblance to Good Enough by nineties indie-poppers Dodgy though…The release date is 29 March 2010 and the seven inch format includes a dub of the heavy-skankin Equality & Justice For All on the flip.
