SMOOVE & TURRELL: Lay It On Me (2014) + video

Lay It On Me Smoove TurrellBerry Geordie is back, in the company of the mighty John Turrell of course, with their latest installment of the ‘northern coal’ sound. Lay It On Me is the first single off the pair’s forthcoming long player Broken Toys and the sort of big soul-clap stomper that is their bread and butter. Or whatever they can afford to eat up north now in these benighted economic times – probably a coal sandwich. I Just Want More on the other hand manages the impressive feat of being both dancefloor magnet (via one of Smoove‘s signature neo-disco beats) and (via Turrell’s lyrics) a veiled indictment of toxic government economic policy. Apparently things are so bad in Newcastle that Turrell has to break rocks all day just to get a bit of pay to take the missus out…
(Out 14 April on Jalapeno Records)
