It’s not even a new single but that hasn’t stopped Pan Amsterdam (a.k.a. the genius pairing of producer thatmanmunkz and jazz trumpeter plus emcee Leron Thomas) dropping not one but two videos for Know The Difference, one of the standouts from standout LP The Pocket Watch. Those who’ve had their ear to the ground will know that this is the track on which Thomas’ delivers a wry address to philistines and the ignorant everywhere over a fat slab of electro-funk. How to represent his message in audio-visual form though? Why – via animation of course! Video 1 opts for a retro minimal look opening with a primitive figure clubbing another over the head, and proceeds through successive dog-eat-dog vignettes – with a brief interlude in which a deity-like figure holds a cat’s cradle amid the carnage. Video 2 is also animated but goes for the old ‘one man and his dog spend a night at the museum approach’ in which a vaguely Zappa-esque character gets an earful from an array of high art pieces. But which is more effective? Ah – you wouldn’t know the difference. UK and US 2018 tour dates below players.
