ORIGINAL GRAVITY RECORDS: Down In The Basement (Vinyl 7″)

The monkey has long been resigned to not keeping up with the 45 release schedule of label Original Gravity whose multi-band ‘roster’ actually consists of pretty much just one man – label boss Neil Anderson – who’s indefatigable brain conjures up soul, funk, early reggae and latin funk releases at a staggeringly prodigious rate. And Down in the Basement is merely the latest drop that the monkey cannot miss writing about – a four-track 45 featuring cuts at the more soulful and funky end of his output. There’s the opener and title track for example – a Hammond-drenched Booker T-goes-Latin affair from Abramo & Néstor (a.k.a. Neil), there’s the stanky-Stax-y blues-funk of Low N Slow of Melvin Craig (a.k.a. Neil) and also closer Uh-Ah-Uh‘s grunt-filled Nawlins-ish funky-soul courtesy of ‘Floyd James & The GTs (a.k.a. Neil). What have I missed out? Oh yes – the best one – the super-funky barnyard strut of Fried Chicken Biscuit from Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts who are actually a real band. Ha – no they’re not. ‘They’ are, of course, Neil. Again.
(Out now on Original Gravity Records)
