NICK FABER: What Happened Yesterday (Vinyl 12″)

NICK FABER: What Happened Yesterday (Vinyl 12[RATING: 5] It’s fair to say Nick Faber has been around the musical block a few times. The veteran big beater’s Let Me Hear You Clap Your Hands came out on Marble Bar in ’99, for example; he was king of the beats on John Turrell’s solo album Kingmaker and has previously remixed minor artists like Kylie and Sugababes. His next trick however, is the release of a new 12″ solo single, What Happened Yesterday. Said midtempo track displays a big beat heritage in its nifty use of vocal samples, guitar fuzz and throbbing disco bass and – well – big beats. So far so good, but this release also includes the aptly-named flip, Unstoppable, a gloriously elegiac tribute to the mod era with even bigger beats than the A-side that would fit right alongside your favourite Skeewiff cuts and old Resident Filters 12″s. It would only be fitting for such shenanigans to come out on twelve inch and that’s precisely what you’ll be able to get your hands on (in orange vinyl, no less, according to the word on the street) featuring the title track in full and radio edit versions, plus Unstoppable in original and remix versions. This is the inaugural release off Faber’s new Fabyl label which is, “the offspring of rock and hip-hop” according to Faber with album/ compilation Arrival to follow some time after. Psychedelic vid. for What Happened Yesterday below plus track players.
