MORLACK: Good To Go Go Vol. IV (2016)

Good To Go Go Vol IV MorlackThere surely can’t be a man outside of Washington DC doing more to propagate a global love of DC go-go music than Morlack. His devotion to this regional Stateside blend of 70s funk and early hip-hop has been a massive influence on much of his work and is the prime focus of his Good To Go Go series which, with the arrival of this, is now on Vol. IV. Of course Morlack is a fully twenty-first century party breaks man so he likes to edit his DC sources with ‘pellas by the great and good from hip-hop’s chequered history as well as boosting the percussion – kind of like DC go-go through an A Skillz filter – if you will. Expect to hear lots of EU and a bit of Slug-Go then but don’t be surprised when Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Monie Love and Born Jamericans turn up too. Highlights include the farty-synth-based Wind It On Ugly (which gets mashed with a lil bit of Missy) and surefire lady-killer Wheels Of Fortune. Good to go-go? I should coco! Chuck Brown would be proud.
(Out 2 June on Funk Blasters)
