LEXSOUL DANCEMACHINE: Lexplosion II

LEXSOUL DANCEMACHINE: Lexplosion IIWhen they first burst onto the contemporary funk scene with Deus Lex Machina in 2016, Estonian outfit Lexsoul Dancemachine offered a funky vision that combined 70s funk rhythms and 60s beat guitar while their second LP was the rather different Con Funk Shun-esque disco funky blend of Sunny Holiday In Lexico.  LP number three, Lexplosion II offers something different again (though arguably stylistically closer to its immediate predecessor) with an 8-tracker that, frequently nods to Rick James and Prince without doing so too obviously.

If you’ve ever seen the band live you’ll know their musicianship is staggeringly impressive and their on-stage performances red-hot, so it’s little surprise that they they’ve also managed to line up some impressive guest musician appearances that indicate the level of respect they command and deserve.  Guitarist Cory Wong appears on the vaguely Prince-ish Money giving the track a second wind somewhere after the bridge in exactly the sort of scorching solo you’d expect. Luiz Black – Brazilian percussionist and veteran of gigging with James Brown himself turns up on squelchy, popping, stop-starty disco-funk of Basics providing some very Bongo-Band-ish pyrotechnics and if you dig your drums then don’t swerve Pike Jawz which is the band’s own drummer giving it some for nearly three minutes almost entirely on his own. The third guest spot involves violinist and fellow Estonian, Liis Lutsoja, who supplies a spacey bit of fiddling on Nu Reality. Elsewhere, Carambola Jelly and Sex offer pneumatic uptempo, late 70s/ early 80s disco-funk, closer Supersoul ends up rocking out and former single Entertainment provides a chilled boogie-funk counterpoint to the rest of the LP. Lexplosion II then – plenty of funky lexcitement on offer.
