GIZELLE SMITH: King Of The Mountain

GIZELLE SMITH: King Of The MountainGizelle Smith proves she’s queen bee with this inspired psych-soul interpretation of Kate Bush’s 2005 number King Of The Mountain. Out go all the wafty art-rock-isms and pantomime dame vocal mannerisms of the original and in come nasty synth, a rolling drum break and Smith dextrously throwing that soul voice around more than usual to create the monkey’s favourite track of hers to date. It’s also the first single to be released off her third LP due early summer – though the story behind Smith’s choice of it goes back to 2019 and a decision during recording sessions to do the cover as a dedication to her father (guitarist and songwriter for The Four Tops, no less), Joe Smith. Sadly Smith Sr. passed away not long after Gizelle decided to cover King Of The Mountain which, as such events do, took a devastating toll leaving her with an album’s worth of tracks that she couldn’t access emotionally. As is also the way with such events however, it eventually contributed to a sense of creative growth and forthcoming album, Revealing, which, by all accounts reflects, tonally, the vibe of this single.
(Out 5 March on Jalapeno Records)
