GHETTO FUNK presents: MEGAN HAMILTON & THE BERMUDAS (GFPD22)(2015) Free download

Megan Hamilton Bermudas Ghetto FunkI think it’s fair to say that the world of ghetto funky breaks is massively under-represented by women – even in the vocal department where they mostly make an appearance – and it’s also fair to say that the world of ghetto funky breaks isn’t massively represented stateside either. This being the case, it’s pretty lucky for women and the states that Twin Cities producer/ vocalist Megan Hamilton is here to do her bit to tip the balance with her live band The Bermudas.

Vocal number Save Me From The Rain and instrumental Gas Station Banana – the first two tracks on Ghetto Funk presents: Megan Hamilton & The Bermudas reveal an artist who applies a rarely heard subtlety to the ghetto funk sound and a funkiness that isn’t always present either. The Peewee Dread-featuring Revolution finds Hamilton showing she’s not a one-trick pony with a dnb cut that manages to be both funky and bashment-influenced while Jungle Indo applies tribal percussive elements and classic rock guitar to the funky breaks mix before heading to planet house. Variety and subtlety then – that’ll be the woman’s touch. Cop the EP below…
