GET ON DOWN: Jukebox Series – Hip-hop classics on 45 for first time (2015)

Jukebox Series hip-hop Get On DownAs seven inch mania metastasizes, prestige re-issue label Get On Down is all set to release a number of hip-hop classics on 45 (including MOP’s Ante Up) that have never previously been on the format because, as one of the label’s co-founders has discovered, not that many hip-hop singles were released on seven inch back in the day. Quite possibly this had something to do with hip-hop djs’ predilection for doing a thing called ‘scratching’ and a twelve inch platter with it’s greater stability and purchase area facilitates the process. Still that’s not to say you can’t scratch with seven inches – and now of course you can shove them in your jukebox as well. That’s assuming you have the several grand required for a quality model – or at least the three hundred required for the budget Argos version. Hip-hop seven inches are also, of course, perfect for northern soul djs who secretly love a bit of Bronx heat but would commit career suicide were they ever to be seen in public with album-sized vinyl.
