DISCOBETA: Down The Block EP

You’d expect nothing less than hefty breakbeat material from DiscObeta and they don’t disappoint on their new Down The Block EP. Said release features two such original cuts – the title track and Yoobie Doo – both of which max out the scales with a presence like reinforced concrete. Yoobie Doo employs several bars of Sean Price’s Sixty Bar Dash over a booming spacey rhythm and comes with a trio of remixes from Mined & Forrest (sci-fi-tinged), Badboe (glitchy and almost verging on Go-go in style) and Pecoe (uptempo with that late 70s/ early 80s pitch-bending funk feel). Meanwhile, the title track is a chugging bass monster that employs a variety of old school breakbeat motifs – pitch-bent synths, old school vocal phrases and cowbell percussion. There’s remixes for this too with Fort Knox Five heading in an uptempo nu-funky direction and Ross Go delivering a groove almost equally as old school as the original but arguably slightly less ominous sounding. Most definitely beats to bump in one’s jeep!
