COCKNEY NUTJOB: Badman EP (2017)

COCKNEY NUTJOB: Badman EPIf there’s one name which has emerged along with DJ Maars, as the ‘other’ key figure in the next generation of reggae hip-hop mash-up kings it is that of Cockney Nutjob who cements his reputation here with his Badman EP and four righteous bangers. Where both producers are equally likely to plunder quality old hip-hop for a handy ‘pella however, Maars generally tends towards a more vintage dusty rocksteady-plus-boom-bap finish for his beats while Mr Nutjob is liable to head for the twenty-first century FX controller and polish everything till it shines in the sub-tropical sun of Bournemouth. And so while on this fat set of crowd movers the ear may recognise the dulcet tones of everyone from Sugarhill Gang to Tha Liks and Lords Of The Underground to a greater or lesser extent, they will also detect the wob and all manner of glitchy trimmings too.
(Out 29 June on Scour Records)
