CHRIS READ feat. PHILL MOST CHILL: Rap Tradition (2013)

[RATING: 5] Rap tradition? There are many aren’t there? Depending on the era. Most recently of course there’s doing a lazy turn on a David Guetta beat – a real nadir I think you’ll agree. Makes you nostalgic for a decade or so ago when you could rely on violent death or something. Go back further still and there were wild and crazy notions of combining a funky beat with Phd-level lyrical prowess. Enter London DJ/ producer Chris Read and rapper Phill Most Chill who, decades after his original early 80s entry into the world of NYC rap, has re-emerged to demonstrate exactly how it should be done. Full props to Chris Read for his old school scratching and breaksmanship – two fresh dope breaks of which the Renaissance Remix has the edge thanks to the rolling b-boy drums and fat bass groove. “Sucker MCs should be seen not heard/ Tradition – understand the meaning of the word!”
