CALIBRO 35: Giulia Mon Amor (2013)

[RATING:5] Italian outfit Calibro 35 join the likes of Big Boss Man and The Qualitons at the mod-patrolled nexus where garage-y sixties rnb and funk meet. As anyone who’s ever hung with mods will know, practically everything is a minefield. You might be wearing the wrong thing – or worse, wearing the right thing in the wrong way. Fred Perry unbuttoned at the neck? You fucking pseud. Only two buttons on your suit jacket? Jesus. And the cuffs don’t even undo. Don’t feel bad. They’re like it to each other too. “Check out my new knitted tie!” “New? What are you? Some sort of scene slag? Mine’s sixties original. £9000 off eBay. Apparently, Steve Marriott touched it once.” With music it’s even worse. Like anything before 1962 or past 1969? Get your coat and fuck off. Probably explains why the band are all wearing balaclavas in the video to the dope Giulia Mon Amor – hide your face and escape censure of the fact that ‘well, those drums weren’t around until ’71’ and the like. Check back soon for news of forthcoming LP Traditori Di Tutti on Record Kicks
