WARREN G: New album ‘The G Files’ + Regulate (Live) video

Could this explain the recent and inspired Warren G-featuring reggae mash-up Regulate Rock from J-Star? Either his finger is firmly on the hip-hop pulse or he is luckier than Lady Luck’s lucky rabbit’s foot. I, on the other hand, feel like a rabbit short one foot after watching old Warren perform his biggest hit live this summer. A G-Funk revival then – I’m sure Nate Dogg will be along presently…
(PRESS RELEASE) After 10 million albums sold worldwide, Warren G’s seventh studio album, THE G FILES, will be released on September 29th. Self-produced and packed with all-star talents including Snoop Dogg, Travis Barker, Ray J and many more, the current single, “100 Miles and Runnin” featuring Raekwon and Nate Dogg is quickly making its way on to radio stations across the country.
When most West Coast artists such as Dr. Dre, Snoop and Tupac were signing with LA’s Death Row Records, Warren walked a different path and signed with East Coast label Def Jam in 1994. Def Jam founder and the God Father of Hip Hop, Russell Simmons, later cited Warren G’s signing as “a turning point” for Def Jam Records and its subsequent mega-success. “After that, Def Jam never looked back,” Simmons wrote in his book Life and Def.
Warren is looking forward to getting back on the road. He has toured the world, most notably, Warren was a part of one of the most successful Hip Hop tours ever- the Up In Smoke Tour with his brother Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Ice Cube and more.
Los Angeles fans last caught Warren performing at the Roxy this past July as a special guest at the Travis Barker/DJ AM show. They performed Warren’s mega-hit “Regulate” to a packed audience and the overwhelming response is a testament to his crossover talent.

DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN & TAME ONE: ‘Flashback’ video + ‘Parallel Uni-Verses’ LP details + tracklist + ‘Special’ free download

Del returns to form in straight-up banger shocker. You’ll have to excuse the monkey’s lateness in picking up on the Flashback single but I’d virtually given up on Mr Jones because his solo projects haven’t exactly been setting my world on fire in the last half decade and more with those tinny arcade game samples and increasingly esoteric lyrics. But then again he’s not solo here is he? This time it’s former Artifacts rapper Tame One’s turn to reign in the whimsical excesses that Del’s mind haemorrhages when left to its own devices. Flashback recalls nothing so much as the sophisticated bottom-heavy funk-vibe of on-form Hiero while two highly respected emcees reminisce about back in the day. Bodes very well for the upcoming Parallel Thought-produced Del/ Tame One project Parallel Uni-Verses from which it is lifted. Actually, while I think about it I’ve got a Parallel Thought 12” from a while back. The bass on it is just stupid. Check to listen to a few more tracks and download super-classy LP track Special below. Everything about this release screams quality. Del, I still love you.
Parallel Uni-Verses drops 13 October 2009 on Gold Dust.

ADIDAS Skateboarding: Autumn 2009 shoes

It’s autumn – and here’s four reasons not to kick up leaves with what you’ve been wearing on your feet all summer. The Superstar is the new Gonz and there’s another two Campus styles over on the Adidas skate page. Just one question. Why won’t they do a cup sole Campus in the black and white?

APATHY: New LP ‘Wanna Snuggle’ details + tracklist + ‘Shoot First’ free download

Heads up! Demigodz founder member Apathy’s back with solo LP number two (Read review of Apathy – Wanna Snuggle HERE) and it sounds pretty damn good…head on over to for a free download of second single and album highlight Shoot First (feat. B-Real and Celph-Titled
(PRESS RELEASE) Wanna Snuggle (released 6 October 2009 on Demigodz Records) features appearance from B Real, Phonte, Celph Titled, Holly Brook (Fort Minor), J-Live, Chip-Fu, Ryu, Blue Raspberry (Wu-Tang), and production from Mike Shinoda.
Even after signing a major label deal with Atlantic Records, to being named one of Urb Magazine’s “Hot 100” artists, being featured in XXL, Vibe, XLR8R, Remix, CMJ, Pound and numerous other publications and joining frequent partner in rhyme (Celph Titled) in forming Demigodz Records, Apathy has spent the better part of his journey as an artist searching for “absolute truth” within his music and within himself.
Though the name implies lethargy, Apathy’s work-ethic has been anything but. Many know him as a founding member of The Demigodz crew (which also includes Styles Of Beyond, Celph Titled and 7L & Esoteric) where he joined the rest of his crew in releasing 2002’s critically acclaimed EP, The Godz Must Be Crazy, (the same EP that led to a major-label bidding war for his services that eventually resulted in Apathy signing with Atlantic Records). Furthermore, Apathy has has also made guest appearances on LP’s from Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda (Fort Minor LP), Sage Francis, Styles Of Beyond, Jedi Mind Tricks, Outerspace and Army of Pharaohs among others. In addition to having his music appear on the hit TV series CSI: Miami, you can also hear his voice on the video game Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition (which featured his track “Drive It Like I Stole It”), Ap has also released a series of highly circulated mixtapes; including 2003’ It’s The Bootleg Muthafuckas! Vol.1, 2004’s ironically entitled Where’s Your Album; which was highlighted by his reworking of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” and The White Stripes “Seven Nation Army” (“It Takes A Seven Nation Army To Hold Us Back”) and 2007’s Baptism By Fire
Apathy’s debut, Eastern Philosophy, was released in 2006 by Babygrande Records and received rave reviews from Vibe Magazine and a slew of prominent publications and he was highlighted as one of the top upcoming emcees by XXL Magazine with a “Show And Prove” selection.
Though its been three years since Apathy’s debut, he has remained busy flexing his production muscle, working with artists like Cypress Hill, EDO . G, Styles Of Beyond and 7L & Esoteric. Yet, Apathy plans to re-stake his claim by taking Hip-Hop by storm again with his long-awaited sophomore LP, Wanna Snuggle, which completely smashes any notion of a sophomore jinx and delivers another timeless rap LP.
Some of the highlights from Wanna Snuggle include the buzz singles that have driven the Internet wild, the uptempo Mike Shinoda produced “Shoot First”, featuring the legendary B-Real (of Cypress Hill) and Celph Titled and the Phonte assisted “True Love.” Also contributing a major influence on Wanna Snuggle is singer Holly Brook, best known for Fort Minor ‘s chart topping single “Where’d You Go.”

DEEP STREET SOUL: Kick Out The Jams (feat. Tia Hunter) b/w Greenbacks (feat. Shirley Davis) – 2009 – 7” review

Rating: ★★★★★ Dirtier and grittier than sex in a gravel pit, this inspired cover of The MC5’s seminal garage rock anthem has to be contender for best new soul/funk 45 of the year. The lead single from Melbourne funk band Deep Street Soul’s self-titled LP due November (yes, another world class funk band from the city that’s already given us The Bamboos and Cookin On Three Burners), it comes with sassy sister-funk vocals from New York‘s Tia Hunter and pays homage to Wayne Kramer and co. by lacing the funk guitar with the subtlest of garage-rock inflections. Then, before your bad self is even close to recovering from that one, there’s another dope sister-funk cut on the B-side – the Shirley Davis featuring, Hammond-toting, hip-shaking Greenbacks. All of which shenanigans should convince you beyond doubt that they most definitely done kicked ‘em out. Check the full album review HERE

FOREIGN BEGGARS & NOISIA – 2009 – Single review

Rating: ★★★½☆

FOREIGN BEGGARS: (On the phone to Dutch DnB boys Noisia) Got that beat for us yet?
NOISIA: (Excitedly) Sure. We have crazy beats for you right now! You know when you change your printer’s ink cartridge and you lift up the lid and it grinds out for you to catch it before it disappears again?
FB’s: (Warily) Ye-eahh?
NOISIA: (Ridiculously pleased with themselves) We sampled that sound but make it a million times heavier!
Ok, maybe it didn’t happen quite like that but on hearing this I do wonder where else Noisia could have lifted inspiration for beats – the office photocopier doing a big double-sided run with staples perhaps or the sound of your laptop burning a cd. And yet the ‘Beggars bigging themselves up over this grime-y industrial strength rhythm keeps growing on me. At first I didn’t like it at all, today I like it…hell – tomorrow I could be saying stuff like ‘it’s the biggest thing in UK hip-hop since Roots Manuva’s Witness.’ Maybe it’s a bit like when your beer-goggles kick into action – in which analogy this track would be the object of your growing affections. The only problem with that is that I haven’t ‘drunk’ any ‘beer’. Maybe it’s because my senses have just been bludgeoned into submission. Comes with Shake It which finds the boys having a cheeky perv over chicks and a dnb mix of Contact too, if you’ve got the energy.

SWOLLEN MEMBERS: New release – Armed To The Teeth LP

It would appear that times have been hard for Swollen Members recently. Never mind because they return with a full-length at the end of next month. And from the bits of it they’ve exposed on their myspace it sounds like it’s going to be banging…anyway – that’s enough limp puns – have a FREE DOWNLOAD of album tracks Red Dragon, Bollywood Chick and Cross Fire and check the Warrior video below the tracklist…
After Enduring Drug Addiction, The Collapse Of Their Former Record Label And Legal Issues, Swollen Members Return Triumphantly With New LP, Armed To The Teeth, Which Will Be Released On 10-27-09 And It Includes Guest Appearances From Talib Kweli, Everlast, Glasses Malone and Slaine
Vancouver based Swollen Members and Battle Axe Records have formed a partnership with California based Suburban Noize Records for the release of the group’s upcoming new projects. The first release under the partnership will be Swollen Members heavily anticipated new studio album “Armed To The Teeth”, which is slated for release October 27th, 2009 through Suburban Noize. The group also plans to release a greatest hits disc and the debut album from Battle Axe Warriors, a new project featuring Swollen Members along with newcomer Tre Nyce, later this year.
“We’re very excited to announce we’ve signed with Suburban Noize Records for the release of our new album and upcoming projects,” said Mad Child from Swollen Members in a statement. “When we decided to make calls to interested labels and shop our new material, Suburban Noize was the first and last call I had to make. After talking with them, I knew right away they were the best home for us because they were already fans of our music. We respect what the label has done for artists like La Coka Nostra and Kottonmouth Kings and we know that they will do everything that they can to push Swollen Members on a global level.”
Swollen Members have been clawing their way to the top of the hip-hop totem pole since their inception. Founded by two of the game’s best MCs, Mad Child and Prevail, along with the help of DJ Rob The Viking, the group has released an impressive back catalog of classic albums and collaborated with some of hip-hop’s biggest names, including Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), Dilated Peoples and Everlast. Meanwhile the group has rocked stages from Los Angeles to Japan performing hundreds of shows a year in front of massive audiences with underground legends like Tech N9ne to mainstream chart toppers like Nelly Furtado, Ghostface and Black Eyed Peas.
With the release of their new studio effort “Armed To The Teeth” and the upcoming Battle Axe Warriors album, Swollen Members are ready to let the industry and fans know they are no longer the world’s best kept secret, but some of the most lethal MCs in the game. “Armed To The Teeth” is a snapshot of the trials and tribulations the group endured during the past two years, including Mad Child’s battle with drug addiction, the collapse of their former record label and the legal troubles that plagued the group throughout the recording process.

Mad Child’s VLOG Recanting His Ascent Into Addiction:

LOWKEY & IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE: Voices of The Voiceless

(PRESS RELEASE) Voices of the Voiceless is the long awaited first collaboration between two of the world’s most conscious recording artists, Lowkey and Immortal Technique.
Lowkey who hails from London is the fastest rising star in British urban music having racked up over 100 shows in 2009 so far as well as giving talks and lectures at political events around the world. The rapper/poet of mixed Arab and British descent has been dubbed as “one of the best lyricists in the Western Hemisphere” by Benjamin Zephaniah and has been wowing audiences as a solo artist as well as in the Indie/Hip Hop superband Mongrel (made up of members of the Arctic Monkeys, Babyshambles and Reverend and the Makers) for which Lowkey is a lead vocalist.
Immortal Technique has been dominating in the independent music arena for the last 5 years with his last two albums (Revolutionary Volume 2 and Third World) selling in their 10,000s on his independent label Viper Records as well as him touring the world drawing huge crowds in all continents.
Both artists are known for their no holds barred political commentaries and supreme lyrical ability and this single is a testament to that with its eerie production a perfect match for the hauntingly poignant lyrics.
