MAKO & THE HAWK: Spacing Rasco – Free Download

(PRESS RELEASE) Is it a mash-up or is it a remix? Are these really two distinct concepts anyway? Mako and The Hawk couldn’t give a monkey’s! Shamelessly stealing Rasco’s vocals from Parker’s ‘Bristol bass’ hit Western Soul, they craftily weld the Cali Agent MC onto a new beat made from an obscure funk 45 dug up by Mako. In doing so they spawn a hip-hop monster! Spacing Rasco begins with a fanfare as it rumbles into earshot, Rasco materialises atop a bar or two of an electro beat to incite the crowd and then he must leap (at some risk to his own personal safety) astride a mighty funk break which steps in the arena and lays waste to all before it. ‘Ave some of that!

WILL C: Losers – 2009 – Single review

Rating: ★★★★★

Love it or hate it, (more often than not, we love it) Bostonian hip-hop has it’s big underground names – Mr Lif, Dagha, Edan, 7L & Esoteric and now you can add Will C to the list. Losers (the debut single off soon come debut LP Evil In The Mirror update + tracklist HERE) is a chilled summery boom-bap groove wherein we find Will having a pop at others for being losers, and then, suddenly, in a moment of terrible existential crisis pondering whether it is not, he, after all, who is the loser. He’s clearly not, of course, otherwise I wouldn’t be giving this the giant big-ups. Equally fresh B-side (well, I say B-side – sadly you’ll have to press this yourself if you want it on vinyl) finds Will and the aforementioned Esoteric doing more what you might call ‘krush-grooving’. Hot shit indeed. Chek!

WILL C: Evil In The Mirror LP Update + tracklist

“Evil In The Mirror”, the debut full length from recording artist Will C, is released 14 July 2009 – monkeyboxing review HERE. A young mind with an against-the-grain view on making music, Will has managed to put together an exciting album in a genre where listeners generally aren’t given enough credit. Dense enough lyrically and musically to become increasingly rewarding upon repeated listens,”Evil…” however does not demand the listener to stop having fun and “dissect” in order to appreciate the record.

The album features the highly talked/typed about lead single, “Losers” (BRK 8805) (monkeyboxing review HERE) and also a guest appearance from Esoteric, one of Hip Hop’s most gifted minds and entertaining artists. The two push things to the brink of insanity on the uptempo sonic tour-de-force, “Synthetic Genetics.”

At the heart of “Evil In The Mirror” is its source material. The nucleus, the back drops that inspire the lyrics. Will says, “When carefully arranged and selected, countless stacks of record LPs, cassettes, 45s, and VHS tapes* hopefully become a finished product with my signature stamp on it. Before there was Evil In The Mirror, there was a Rock album here, an Exotica record there… Folk, Jazz, Space Age Pop, Disco, Funk… all sorts of records being selected, if only slightly “by random.” Some because they have interesting covers, others because they’re cheap, and still others, for example, because a co-worker felt compelled to lend me a Country Moog record for the hell of it. Top all of that off with those odd days spent tip-toeing into rooms to snag records I’m STILL not supposed to lay a finger on (at 22… really??!!) and the result is the adventure that became “Evil In The Mirror.”

Will C – Evil In The Mirror – tracklist:
1. Frog Among Queens
2. It Ain’t The 80s
3. Water Ice (With A Gaseous Center)
4. Alternate Earth
5. Infinite Hourglass
6. Synthetic Genetics Feat. Esoteric
7. Zodiac Extension
8. Trainspotting
9. The Places
10. Be Yourself Syndrome
11. Uncle Owen (Extended Re-edit)
12. Recurring Dream
13. Losers

LAURA VANE & THE VIPERTONES: Am I Dreaming? – 2009 – Single review

Rating: ★★★★☆

‘Northern soul’ style tracks are the new black in deep funk circles these days since everyone’s ‘chasing Amy’, and no band’s album would be complete without it’s own. I refer to recent output by The Bamboos, Smoove & Turrell, forthcoming releases from Cookin On 3 Burners and now Dutch/ English combo Laura Vane & The Vipertones with this promo for their imminent LP. I’m not a massive fan of the un-syncopated northern soul beat but if it’s this good, I might get converted. Somewhere between Alice Russell and Kylie Auldist, the voice of Laura Vane is, of course, the ‘Tones secret weapon although such a description does make her sound a bit like something devised to bring World War II to an early close.

MAKO & THE HAWK: Shut Up And Give It Up – Free download

(PRESS RELEASE) The second mash-up from these two, this is a project from which Mako has tried to distance himself, claiming that with Shut Up And Give It Up the Hawk was trying to ‘house’ him and that it sounds nothing like the “create something a bit like Rapper’s Delight” idea they had originally mooted. Despite this, the Hawk persists with the flimsy argument that Mako’s suggestion to, ‘put in some extra kick drums’ constitutes a significant contribution to the production process. Whatever the truth, this unholy marriage of Public Enemy and The Ting Tings will have so many hands in the air in the coming months that it should boost deodorant sales exponentially, with knock-on economic effects that might ultimately lift the UK from the current recession. Hurrah!

B REAL: ‘Fire’ – video

In which the ex-Cypress Hill main man goes a bit reggaeton with Damian Jr Gong Marley. Well, who else? The random video generator’s come up with lots of fire and smoke imagery for this one. And barely clad girls. And barely-clad girls appearing out of smoke. Oh, and B and D are in there occasionally. It’s jiggy.

PUMA: Spring/ Summer kicks 2009

Puma have been busy again with the limited releases. Check the pic below featuring from left to right, top to bottom: a nice blue and white Suede, a black leather Match with translucent soles, a beast of a high top in the resurrected Cat 2 ST, two Basket colourways white/ orange/ gold and black/purple and the ‘El’ Clyde with a rose design detail on the heel. As always, some of these will be available at major outlets. Others, however, will only be available at select shops and by now, no doubt, only in the very largest and the very smallest sizes as some sneaker freak will have got their first and bought all the in-between sizes to hoard in their hidden trainer dungeon so they can gloat at rack upon rack of box-fresh kicks that they’ll never wear…

Ronson and Merriweather cohort Seb Chew lobs together a minimix of the better tracks (and one of the worst) off the Love & War album with such luminaries as ATCQ, Mos Def and – er – some other people in an effort to garner young Daniel some extra kudos by association. And it kind of works – except for the bit at the end which features Adele. Get that puppy here:
