Hello it’s The Supremes. I mean the Lovelites – no – The Vandellas – ooh, no – its The Womack Sisters. Now there’s a name with a soul lineage. And they are actually the daughters of Cecil and Linda Cooke Womack which means…they’re also the granddaughters of soul legend Sam Cooke. Of course they won’t be channelling a Motown soul vibe – it being 2017 and all, don’t be ridiculous – that’s too much to hope for…what’s that sorry? They will? Right down to the beehives and spangly dresses and Holland Dozier Holland-style harmonies. And it’s good? And they’re very easy on the eye? What are the chances? Surely there must be some nods to the fact that five decades have past since the golden era of soul though? Well – they’d never get away with cover art that filthy back in the day and there is a trace of TLC sass about BG, Zemani and KC. Could this be yet another harbinger of the return to a more traditional soul aesthetic along with the likes Lady Wray and Aloe Blacc? You’ll have to wait for the album due later in the year.
