THE SOUL SNATCHERS: Scratch My Itch (2011) Album release details

Many are those who attempt to recreate that original funky soul sound but there are few who actually manage it as well as The Soul Snatchers whose new LP Scratch My Itch is released in February. The official video preview and the soundcloud snippets of the new one (see below) would suggest you can expect plenty of ‘huh’, quite a lot of ‘uhh’ and a bit of ‘get down!’ along with fat horns, wah-wah chops and big breaks. Anyone who’s heard their track People

LOVE MUSIC, HATE RACISM & CULT MUSIC present: Funk Against Fascism (2011)

There are many reasons to reject fascism in its many forms – the one-dimensional, ‘might is right’ attitude, the staggering lack of logic in its ideological arguments and crucially – the shit music. Wagner and Skrewdriver? Christ! Enter breakbeat deejay Totalcult who (in collaboration with Love Music, Hate Racism has been marshalling the rebel forces

LACK OF AFRO: This Time (2011) + ‘A Time For’ video

It seems Lack Of Afro’s recent single was a spot-on indicator of what to expect from Adam Gibbons on his new full length effort This Time which supplies things catering for all needs broadly soul/ funky from the coffee-table to the dancefloor – or from the atmospheric to the banging if you’re sensitive to the term ‘coffee table’ – some people are you know – it’s all the espresso – makes them uptight. Anyway – let’s see how he did on his ‘difficult third’ album.

APATHY: Honkey Kong LP release details + tracklist (2011)

Did you hear about the difference between Donkey Kong and Honkey Kong? The first was a game that showed an ape on a platform while the other is a platform for Apathy to show he’s got game. Yeah alright, not brilliant, but no worse than the title of an album that is the third solo outing for the artist who created it. Well, I say ‘solo’ – he’s brought most of his mates along and, with any luck, it’ll be every bit as good as 2009’s Wanna Snuggle

T BIRD & THE BREAKS: Never Get Out Of This Funk Alive (2011) – Album review

Rating: ★★★★★
Proper funk – where you been you hussy? Mainly hiding out round at T Bird’s place seems to be the answer on the strength of Never Get Out Of This Funk Alive. This is the second full length album from Texan heavy funk and soul outfit T Bird & The Breaks and giant middle finger to all that jazzy noodling that’s been coming out of the contemporary funk scene

DANIEL WANDERS & TOBIAS KIRMAYER PRESENT: Feeling Nice (Tramp Records)(2011) + tracklist

Rating: ★★★★★
There’s a rich irony to be enjoyed in the fact that the word ‘rare’ is one of the commonest words in the titles or subtitles of funk compilations. However, since Daniel Wanders and Tobias Kirmayer have come up with 12 hot dancefloor cuts for Feeling Nice that haven’t already been compiled to within an inch of their lives (far from it, in fact) you can take these two very much at their word when they say ‘rare.’

RAY LUGO & THE BOOGALOO DESTROYERS: Mi Watusi – Album (2011)

With the debut single from this (Swingy Boogaloo) in the wings, the full album itself, Mi Watusi, is due to drop a month later and finds Ray Lugo in full salsa caliente de New York mode channelling the spirits of the likes of Ray Barretto, The Lebron Brothers and king Tito. Honestly, it’s like the golden era of Fania Records resurrected.

Bristol beat luminaries Boca 45 and Parker a.k.a. The Beekeepers finally make good their promise to deliver a full length album, Apiculture, in the wake of this year’s moody Ascending Change EP and their debut party-banger effort the Bee Funk EP from 2009.

BEASTIE BOYS: Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 – Album review + Audio – 2011

It’s a couple of years late but the Beasties are finally back. Is there anyone else who’s been in the hip-hop game as long as they have who still garners this much hype on the eve of a release? To date they haven’t released a single duff hip-hop album and their last hip-hop release (2005’s To The 5 Boroughs) was a superb effort. On the other hand
