‘Northern soul’ style tracks are the new black in deep funk circles these days since everyone’s ‘chasing Amy’, and no band's album would be complete without it’s own. I refer to recent output by The Bamboos, Smoove & Turrell, forthcoming releases from Cookin On 3 Burners and now Dutch/ English combo Laura Vane & The Vipertones with this promo for their imminent LP. I’m not a massive fan of the un-syncopated northern soul beat but if it’s this good, I might get converted. Somewhere between Alice Russell and Kylie Auldist, the voice of Laura Vane is, of course, the ‘Tones secret weapon although such a description does make her sound a bit like something devised to bring World War II to an early close.
