BREAKBEAT PARADISE RECORDINGS: Big Fat Mama Beats (2016)

Big Fat Mama Breakbeat ParadiseHaving done the ‘old’ (with the retro 90s-ish sound of the Badass Funk EP from earlier in the year), Breakbeat Paradise Recordings now do the ‘new’ assembling a seven-artist strong squad consisting of Discobeta, Mr Rich & Caretaker, Crashgroove, Wiccatron, Funky Boogie Brothers, Rory Hoy and Pulpfusion to take things musically bang-up-to-date with the Big Fat Mama Beats EP – all expectations (as raised by the title and the artwork) to the contrary. It warps, it grinds, it glitches and in directions you might not even have considered. Step forward Funky Boogie Brothers whose Crunch may well have you contemplating the background music on your next visit to your local curry emporium in a new light. DiscoBeta kick things off with a stomping, skanking Chinese Robots ‘re-up’, Mr Rich & Caretaker get glitchy on a soul tip, Crashgroove is back once again like a renegade master with a grinder, Wiccatron lulls you into a sense that you’re in classic boom-bap land before suddenly turning the FX up to Skrillex on the warp-o-meter. Oh yes and of course Rory Hoy gets to Rok Tha Party his reliable manner while Pulpfusion closes proceedings with the acid-drenched ‘almost’ title-track – Big Fat Mama which goes full Heavenly Social (so a little bit retro after all) with it’s Hard Hop Heathen and Josh Wink-isms.
