JOHNNYPLUSE: Load Up On Guns (2011) – Free download

Never a man to let an opportunity pass him by, Bulabeats label boss Johnnypluse cashes in on the cashing-in of the twentieth anniversary of the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind album by putting out a cheeky retro breaks number that makes shameless use of ‘that’ guitar riff from Teen Spirit. Well, I say ‘cashes in’ – this one’s actually a free download

RANDA & THE SOUL KINGDOM: What You Need (2011) + tracklist

Second LP for this highly respected Aussie funk and soul outfit and it seems like Randa Khamis and The Soul Kingdom have been engaging in a bit of generic expansionism resulting in annexation of the surrounding territories of disco and northern soul whilst maintaining a firm grasp over their original funky dominion. Indeed What You Need has been done so well I’d be hard put to classify it as anything than a super tight set

DANNY SPICE feat. Craig G: King Of The Beat (2011) + video

Danny Spice drops a new beat of ominous but vintage-sounding head-nod and who should happen along with a few rhymes but former Juice Crew member and rap icon Craig G. There used to be loads of this stuff around in the mid-nineties and…well, it still sounds pretty good. It’s the sound of walking into a really dark and packed–out basement club, redolent of pungent weed in 1995 and feeling a vague sense of menace. Good times.

WRIGGLY SCOTT feat. Jibberish: Twilight Empires (2011) – Free download

Twilight Empires sees producer Wriggly Scott and rapper Jibberish fuse mellow groove and social commentary in a way we tend not to see very often these days. Dusty samples combined with scratching and oriental pipes provide a sinuous backdrop for Jibberish to stick it to oppressive governments in the Middle East (“Here in the Middle most of them are self elected, reside in high places unaffected, proletariat- neglected”) and interfering governments in the West

Ghetto Funk presents: B-SIDE (2011)

The latest in the Ghetto Funk label’s ‘Artist Series’ and this time it’s the turn of B-Side who’s new EP should ensure his going down in history as a terror since the ghetto funk era. Where his All The Girls EP earlier this year carried a fairly conventional payload, this has atomic capabilities – as dancefloors will find out after the minute-or-so-long build ups of both tracks on the A side

COCKNEY NUTJOB: Sicker Than Your Average (Ghetto Funk mix) (2011) – Free download

“Cockney, Cockney can’t you see? Sometimes your ways just hypnotise me?” Yes – Essex to Bournemouth transplant and Brap.fm presenter Cockney Nutjob has given Biggy’s Hypnotise a – well – a cockney nutjob here and mutates it into a sicker than your average ghetto funk wobbler. And, as if that’s not cheeky enough, our Mr Nutjob has only made the whole thing available free

KOOL HERTZ: Whatta Joint EP (2011)

Kool Hertz seems to be operating on the correct frequency here with his new four track EP Whatta Joint as he raids funk and hip-hop’s glorious past for the benefit of the ghetto-funkin’ yout’. In fact he manages something of a generational bridging manouevre between the bass-wobble-addicted kids and aging b-boys by dint of employing – well – wobbly bass and old school boom-bap breaks

JASMINE KARA: ‘In The Basement’ 45 (2011)

Rating: ★★★★★
With various funk labels spewing out the white boy jazz funk in the last couple of years there was only really one thing for the label best known for that insidious practice to do. Start releasing dirty soul and funk. Thus it is that I find myself not only praising an Acid Jazz release but also comparing this cover of Etta James and Sugar Pie DeSanto’s classic

FUZZBOX INC: Party People (2011)

Fuzzbox Inc. are an outfit known for their funky breaks and according to the PR, their latest Greg Blackman-featuring single Party People stays true to their ‘unique funky style.’ When I had a listen though, it sounded like they’d gone off piste. And when I say ‘off piste’ I mean ‘away to a pill-fuelled orgy in the rough direction of the Balearic islands.’
