SOME DJ & MR CHOMBEE: It’s Summertime (2011)

It’s summer time? Not round here it bloody isn’t. This notwithstanding, Some DJ and trusty sidekick Mr Chombee dig out and dust off Mungo Jerry’s notorious drink drive anthem creating the perfect weapon for the ghetto funk DJ who’s got stitched up by the promoter with the wedding disco crowd by mistake. Over on the flip it’s Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock’s It Takes Two that gets a second look through Some DJ’s warped ghetto

THE APPLES: Killing (Johnnypluse remix) (2011) – free download

In which Irish breaks bandit and Bulabeats label boss Johnnypluse gives The Apples’ jazz-funk version of Rage Against The Machine’s fire-starting anthem a touch of the breaks. Done, one suspects, without the knowledge of either band or their record labels and released for free – now that really is raging against the machine. How do you like them apples?

FAKTS ONE: The Chop Shop (2011) – free download

“Where the bloody hell have you been?!” For those not in the know, DJ/ producer Fakts One used to be one third of the Perceptionists – the other two members being Mr Lif and Akrobatik. They made a really good LP called Black Dialogue six years ago shortly after which Fakts One pulled a spectacular disappearing act for reasons much-speculated about. Three years ago, his delayed debut LP Long Range got a well-received released but Fakts remained m.i.a. Until now

KATALYST feat. Kween G: Ready To Drop (2011) + video

Oz-producer Katalyst follows up his sweet downtempo reggae Stephanie McKay-collabo Day Into Night with party-starting, breakbeat-fuelled, Kween G vehicle Ready To Drop. Channelling an old school NY hip-hop vibe without sounding overtly retro and adding a dash of the sort of territory explored recently by the Beastie Boys/ Santigold hook-up Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win, it also samples the Beasties

TOTALCULT: Bomber Inna Dance (2011) + ‘Kwali Tea’ free download

Totalcult unloads the goods in time for this weekend’s Notting Hill Carnival in the shape of this three tracker, the contents of which suggest he’s been hanging with types who like the kush and I don’t mean an ancient nation in north-east Africa. This might explain the leisurely minute and a half intro to Handsworth Evolution – which, nevertheless, once it gets going, is a heavy slice of midtempo breakbeat reggae and no mistake

BLAKTRIX: ‘Some People Never Go Crazy’ LP (2011) + video

An album with six tracks and an intro? I’ve known longer EPs! Mind you some people are never happy are they? After all, here is one of the UK’s finer rhymers and UK hip-hop’s next-man, Blaktrix with his latest drop Some People Never Go Crazy. Of the best cuts, former single No Drama is the first and it’s here that we find Blaktrix and buddy Ralph Ripshit delivering mellow stoner advice about

BADBOE: One Of Those Days EP (2011) + video

Rating: ★★★★★
Not one to rest on his laurels while habitual crony Prosper is off doing the big beat/ nufunk thing, original nufunker Badboe only decides he’s going to share a massive skankin hip-hop banger with us all in the shape of One Of Those Days – the lead single of his forthcoming second album. Cheers guv – don’t mind if I do. On toasting duties and completely on point is MC Coppa a man I last caught ripping things to shreds on

PROSPER & RORY HOY: Get Dat Boogie Chase EP (2011)

I think this might just be my favourite Big M release since Vol 8 of Big M Productions (the one with Breakbeat Junkie & DJPs massive Drop Down on it) came out. In a large part, it has to be said, this is because of the cumbia stylings of Todo Es Nuevo for, as any MB regulars will know, the monkey’s all over a big latin breaks effort. And there have certainly been some bangers this year – DJ Moar, Panama Cardoon and Kuhjo having

LACK OF AFRO: This Time (2011) + ‘A Time For’ video

It seems Lack Of Afro’s recent single was a spot-on indicator of what to expect from Adam Gibbons on his new full length effort This Time which supplies things catering for all needs broadly soul/ funky from the coffee-table to the dancefloor – or from the atmospheric to the banging if you’re sensitive to the term ‘coffee table’ – some people are you know – it’s all the espresso – makes them uptight. Anyway – let’s see how he did on his ‘difficult third’ album.

JINX IN DUB: Bass Bunker Dubz EP (2011)

Dublin’s Dirty Dubsters recently signed Jinx In Dub to their label and it’s not hard to see why with this four track EP which (bass) drops four cuts in various dub styles. Warrior Charged rocks it traditional dub reggae style, Shoot 2 Kill opts for a more stuttery beat and Havoc gets it’s twenty first century on by lathering on the bass wobble. It’s opener Traffic Jammin that’s likely to cause the most damage on dancefloors though
