NICK PRIDE & THE PIMPTONES feat. JESS ROBERTS: Waitin So Long (Smoove remix) video (2011)

Here we are then – Smoove’s drums of death, ‘coal funk’ reboot of the Jess Roberts-featuring debut single and best track off Nick Pride & The Pimptones’ new long player Midnight Feast Of Jazz. It’s shot on a rooftop for added drama, not sure where though – the derelict cargo cranes in the background speak perhaps of Newcastle’s industrial past but the sun’s shining so it can’t be there, surely, since it’s always either raining or hunched under doomy grey clouds?

SAVANT feat. Dibbz Dreek: Fresh She Is (Satchill Head’s Reprise) (2011)

The indefatigable MC Savant a.k.a. Stanstro is on it again, this time with Dibbz Dreek of Fresh Life Curriculum and a paean to this chick they both fancy. And it has to be said, she sounds rather attractive having: a “body like a poem, written in calligraphy,” rather well-off but still a bit street, “the type to have a two car garage go to work/ And still keep a doobie in the Luis Vuitton purse, word”

HERO No. 7/ GUMBO YA YA: Balacava Man (Hero No. 7 remix)/ Black Mountain (Gumbo Ya Ya remix) – (2011)

Hero Records mailed me the details of this three weeks ago with profuse apologies about the fact that they meant to send it to me a month previously (i.e. when the release actually came out) but didn’t because there was a bit of a fail on the promotional side of things. Full of swift posting intentions I then inadvertently returned the favour by forgetting this was in my inbox for the aforementioned three weeks like a colossal bumblefuck

BLACK FEELING VOL. 2: Burning Spear/ Shaft In Africa 45 sampler (2011)

Lance ‘funk is my middle name’ Ferguson of Bamboos/ Cookin’ On 3 Burners fame brings forth the second volume of the Black Feeling project shortly. The central conceit behind this (as with the original) is that Lance and buddies get to cover funk-soul and jazz-funk classics but each one under a different pseudonym. On this album taster, S.O.U.L.’s Burning Spear gets a frantically percussive makeover

SOUL REVOLUTION: One More Time (2011)

Soul Revolution are ‘The Lion Of Bordeaux’ and Don Argentino (no, really) – two heads brought together by the lure of the smoky basement clubs of the capital of Aquitaine who discovered a shared love of the U.S. West Coast hip-hop underground. ‘Le Lion de Bordeaux,’ in particular, may sound familiar to UK funk heads, probably because he’s the lead singer in a band with one of the best names (and some of the best sounds) in

CMC & SILENTA: Funky Town (2011)

Manmade Records’ big boss men, CMC and Silenta have just dropped this party cut on their other label Roca which revolves around the old Banbarra Shack Up beat made famous by (among others) Stetsasonic on Talkin’ All That Jazz. This is the fastest I’ve ever heard it used though and it triggers the bpm radar at a nu funkin 127 bpm or thereabouts. Keeping up is MC Penny wryly observing

DJ MOAR: Cumbia’s Beat / B-Batucada (2011)

More from Parisian funky breaks afficionado DJ Moar in the shape of this sweet little mid-tempo, latin b-boy breaks gem out (correctly) on seven inch at the start of next month. As the title might lead you to believe, this makes full use of a dusty old Cumbia track and some funky breaks that – as luck would have it – Moar just happened to have lying around

FIRST WORD RECORDS: First Word Is 7 (2011) – free download

“Funk, soul, hip-hop, reggae, beats and beyond” – here’s a drop that’s right up the monkey’s street and it’s freer than Mr Humphries from Are You Being Served on his day off. Leeds-based First Word Records is seven years old (hence the title First Word Is 7) and by way of celebration they’ve put up an album for download gratis. It’s not to be sniffed at either with the likes of Kid Kanevil, Souleance, 6IX Toys, and The Haggis Horns

VARIOUS: Soul Braza – Brazilian 60’s & 70’s Soul Psych Vol 1 – Album (2011) + tracklist

Rating: ★★★★★
Couldn’t let this puppy go by without a mention – the label releasing this isn’t called No Smoke for nothing. Soul Braza is fire and yet another reason why this May is a five star month for music. How can you not love a female vox funk-soul version of Hey Joe where the only recognisable words are ‘Hey Joe’?

EWAN HOOZAMI: Straight Out Of Charleston (2011) – free download

In which Bristol’s Ewan Hoozami enthusiastically wheels his trolley down the ‘genre aisle’ of the music producer’s supermarket helping himself liberally to dubstep, jazz, ghetto funk and a couple of special offer acapellas from Masta Ace and MJ, among others. The result is Straight Out Of Charleston an entity which builds and builds throughout its duration in a very big, soulful and totally twenty-eleven kind of way
